Sustainability of post-disaster psychosocial support: A systematic review
(İstanbul Gelişim Üniversitesi, 2026) Bal, Fatih; Filazoğlu Çokluk, Gülşen; Savaş, Esra; Okkay, İpek
This systematic review examined 24 studies published between 2009 and 2025 in the PubMed database to evaluate the sustainability and effectiveness of post-disaster psychosocial support models. The studies covered various types of disasters, geographical regions, age groups, and risk populations. Findings indicate that psychosocial support interventions are effective in reducing post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and psychological distress. Resilience, social support, self-efficacy, and community resources emerged as protective factors for mental health. However, some interventions exhibited limitations such as short duration, narrow scope, and lack of adaptation to local needs. Women, older adults, children, and individuals with low socioeconomic status were found to be at higher risk. Long term follow-ups showed a general decrease in symptoms, though social isolation and living conditions occasionally had negative impacts. Overall, the findings demonstrate that community-based, long term, and holistic models involving local actors are effective in reducing post-traumatic stress and depression symptoms, and that sustainability can be strengthened through systematic planning in post-disaster mental health services.

Evaluating the psychosocial benefits of mindfulness-based art therapy for breast cancer patients: A preliminary study
(BioMed Central, 2026) Demir, Volkan; Savaş, Esra
This preliminary study evaluates the psychosocial benefits of mindfulness-based art therapy (MAT) for breast cancer patients. A quasi-experimental design was used with 14 participants in the experimental group and 15 in the control group. The experimental group attended eight weekly 3-hour MAT sessions. The control group attended a single 3-hour seminar on coping strategies during cancer, which was conducted after the completion of post-test data collection. Pre- and post-intervention measures assessed coping attitudes, cancer empowerment, grief symptoms, and general health. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results indicated that MAT significantly improved coping attitudes, cancer empowerment, and grief symptoms but did not impact general health. These findings suggest that MAT holds potential psychosocial benefits for breast cancer patients, particularly in enhancing cancer empowerment, coping strategies, and reducing grief symptoms. Future research should focus on more comprehensive trials to systematically validate the efficacy of MAT in oncology settings.

Spiritually integrated process assessment scale (SIPAS): Validity and reliability study
(Prof. Dr. Halil Ekşi, 2026) Ekşi, Halil; Akyol, Havvanur; Aydın, Neslihan; Karalı, Fatma Betül; Özalp, Mehmet; Tunç, M. Furkan; Turgut, Ebru Talibe
This study sought to adapt the Spiritually Integrated Process Assessment Scale into Turkish and evaluate its psychometric properties. Data were collected from adult participants through convenience sampling. Of the 399 individuals who initially completed the survey, 51 cases were excluded due to extreme outliers, yielding a final sample of 348 participants. Following rigorous translation and back-translation procedures, participants completed the SIPAS alongside a conceptually related measure for criterion validity. Data screening confirmed normality assumptions, and analyses were conducted using SPSS (v.25) and R/lavaan. Internal consistency was examined through Cronbach’s alpha, and construct validity was assessed via Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The scale and its subscales demonstrated high internal consistency. Convergent validity was supported by a significant positive correlation with a related spiritual construct, while discriminant validity was evidenced by a non-significant correlation with a measure of general counseling effectiveness. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) results supported the scale’s factorial validity; the modified first-order model, which provided the best fit, exhibited acceptable fit indices. The Turkish SIPAS demonstrated high reliability and satisfactory fit indices. Findings provide evidence that the adapted scale is valid and reliable, offering a robust tool for evaluating professionals’ integration of spirituality and religion in counseling practice.

The effect of psychological flexibility and intolerance of uncertainty on decision-making styles in university students
(Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University, 2026) Turgut, Ebru Talibe; Kalı Soyer, Makbule
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of psychological flexibility and intolerance of uncertainty on individuals' decision-making styles among university students. The study was designed as a correlational survey model, and data were collected from 381 university students aged 18-29. Participants completed the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale, the Psychological Flexibility Scale, and the Rational and Intuitive Decision Making Styles Scale. Multiple linear regression analysis was used in the data analysis. The dependent variables of this study are the subdimensions of decision-making styles, namely rational decision making and intuitive decision making. The independent variables are the subdimensions of psychological flexibility, which include acceptance, being present, defusion, self as context, values, and committed action. The other independent variable are the subdimensions of intolerance of uncertainty, specifically future-oriented anxiety and inhibitory anxiety. According to the study's findings, the subdimensions of psychological flexibility —namely, values and committed action, being present, and defusion —along with the subdimension of intolerance of uncertainty, specifically future-oriented anxiety, significantly predicted rational decision-making. Furthermore, it was determined that the subdimensions of psychological flexibility, self as context, as well as values and committed action, are meaningful predictors of intuitive decision making. The research findings were discussed in the context of existing literature.

Examining the relationships between listening skills and communication competence of married women
(Akademik Perspektif Derneği, 2026) Uzun, Dürdane; Keçeci, Berra
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between married women’s listening skills and their levels of communication competence. The sample of the study consists of 406 married women over the age of 18 in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul, selected through a convenience sampling method. This quantitative research is based on the relational survey model, and data were collected using a demographic information form developed by the researcher, the Communication Competence Scale, and the Listening Types Scale. The data were found to be normally distributed, and regression analyses were conducted to determine the extent to which the dimensions of listening types predict communication competencies. The study results indicated that employed married women had higher scores in the subscales of empathy, individual aspects, and communication adequacy. The duration of marriage also significantly affected their adaptability. The findings revealed that listening skills are significant predictors of communication competence. In particular, empathic and relational listening were found to have positive and significant effects on empathy, social behavior, adaptation, and encouragement in communication competencies. Consequently, this study demonstrates that listening skills play a fundamental role in enhancing communication competence among married women. These results highlight the importance of expanding programs aimed at developing listening and communication skills, strengthening family counseling services, and establishing support mechanisms for women.

Social anxiety, quality of life, and healthy lifestyle behaviors in Turkish women with infertility problems
(Asos Yayınları, 2025) Savaş, Esra; Little, Steven
This study examined the relationship between social anxiety, quality of life, and healthy lifestyle behaviors among Turkish women undergoing infertility treatment and those who conceived following treatment. Infertility often leads to heightened anxiety, distress, and changes in lifestyle habits. A total of 200 women (100 undergoing treatment, 100 post-conception) were recruited from a fertility clinic in Istanbul, Turkey. Participants completed the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, Fertility Quality of Life Questionnaire, and Healthy Lifestyle Behavior Scale II. Group comparisons were conducted using Mann-Whitney U tests, and multiple regression analyses assessed predictive relationships. Women undergoing treatment reported significantly higher social anxiety and avoidance levels compared to those who conceived. No significant group differences were observed in fertility-related quality of life. However, women receiving treatment demonstrated healthier nutritional behaviors, likely reflecting increased dietary awareness during treatment. Other lifestyle factors, including physical activity and stress management, did not differ between groups. Regression analyses indicated that higher social anxiety and lower engagement in healthy lifestyle behaviors predicted lower fertility-related quality of life. These findings underscore the persistent psychological burden of infertility, even after conception, and highlight the need for integrated interventions addressing both emotional and lifestyle factors to improve the well-being of women facing infertility.

Neurobiology of cancer: A review from psychooncologic and neuroscientific perspective
    (Lut Tamam, 2026) Savaş, Esra
This review emphasizes the need to understand not only the biological but also the psychological and neurobiological aspects of cancer. Factors such as psychosocial stress, depression and social isolation have important effects on cancer initiation and progression through the neuroendocrine system and the immune system. In this context, the effects of interactions between the nervous system and the immune system on the tumor microenvironment, neuroinflammation and neurotransmitter levels are detailed. In addition, the neurobiological effects of cancer treatments (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy) on cognitive and emotional functions were discussed; “chemobrain”, neuropathic pain and treatment-related neurocognitive impairments were explained. Recent research has shown that these effects can be mitigated by psychooncological approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy and mindfulness. These interventions support neuroplasticity by regulating stress responses and their effects on brain regions are supported by neuroimaging studies. Finally, the critical role of neuropsychological assessments and cognitive rehabilitation programs in individualized intervention processes was emphasized and the importance of an interdisciplinary approach was revealed. This study aims to critically evaluate the existing literature and draw attention to the gaps in the research field by comprehensively examining the neurobiological and psychooncological effects of cancer.

Preliminary effects of MBCT on coping, self-compassion, and empowerment in early-stage breast cancer
(Selcuk University Press, 2026) Savaş, Esra
Aim: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of a Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) program on coping attitudes, self-compassion, and cancer-related empowerment among women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. Materials and Methods: Eighty women with stage 0–II breast cancer were assigned to either an intervention group (n = 40) or a control group (n = 40). The intervention group completed an eight-week group-based MBCT program, while the control group received a single three-hour informational seminar after the completion of the intervention group program. All participants completed the Coping Attitudes Scale, the Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form, and the Cancer Empowerment Scale from pre-to-post. Due to violations of normality assumptions, data were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed-rank tests and Mann–Whitney U tests. False discovery rate correction was applied to control for multiple comparisons. Results: Significant improvements were observed in coping attitudes, self-compassion, and empowerment levels within the intervention group (p < .05). Notably, the increase in self-compassion may be attributed to the gender- and culturally sensitive structure of the intervention delivered in the Turkish context. Compared with the control group, the intervention group showed sizable pre to post gains (CAS: 83.9→115.4; SCS SF: 19.9→39.8; CES: 154.4→160.8), while controls showed minimal change or decline (CAS: 84.3→80.9; SCS SF: 24.0→25.2; CES: 151.0→140.2); group differences favored MBCT at post test (FDR adjusted p’s ≤ .005). Conclusion: These findings suggest that mindfulness-based group interventions may serve as an effective psychosocial approach for supporting psychological well-being in female cancer patients. In addition to reducing psychological symptoms, the MBCT program enhanced coping flexibility and internal empowerment. These preliminary findings warrant consideration of culturally sensitive MBIs within oncology services; however, time matched randomized trials are required before making firm recommendations.

An examination of the relationship between perceived parental attitudes and test anxiety among 8th grade students
(Recep Kanat, 2025) Noyan, Reyhan; Keçeci, Berra
This study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived parenting styles and test anxiety levels among 8th grade students. The research was designed within the framework of the relational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, and the sample consisted of 318 students studying in 10 public secondary schools in Eyüpsultan district of Istanbul during the 2024–2025 academic year. Data were collected through the Parental Consent Form, Demographic Information Form, Parental Attitude Scale (PAS), and Westside Test Anxiety Scale (WTAS). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0, and independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression tests were conducted. The results revealed that female students experienced significantly higher levels of test anxiety compared to male students. Correlation analysis showed significant negative relationships between test anxiety and the dimensions of acceptance-interest and psychological autonomy. Multiple regression analysis indicated that only the psychological autonomy dimension was a significant predictor of test anxiety. No significant differences were found in test anxiety levels according to different types of 3 parental attitudes. These findings demonstrate that students’ test anxiety is significantly associated with the psychological autonomy and acceptance they perceive from their parents. The results are consistent with previous studies in the literature, showing that democratic parenting styles and psychologically supportive approaches have a reducing effect on test anxiety. In this regard, the study contributes to the understanding of psychosocial factors influencing test anxiety. Based on the findings, it can be suggested that strengthening guidance and counseling services, expanding parental awareness programs, and encouraging teachers to collaborate with families are crucial steps in reducing students’ test anxiety. Furthermore, parents adopting approaches that provide greater psychological autonomy and acceptance may help students cope more effectively with test anxiety.

Addressing spirituality in counseling: Turkish mental health professionals’ views on a training program for professional competencies
(Springer Nature Link, 2026) Ekşi, Halil; Turgut, Ebru Talibe; Karalı, Fatma Betül; Şen, Hale; Akyol, Havvanur; Aydın, Neslihan; Koç, Yusuf Ziya
The integration of spirituality into counseling has gained increased attention due to its significant impact on psychological well-being. However, mental health profes sionals often face challenges with incorporating spiritual dimensions into therapy, primarily due to inadequate training, conceptual ambiguity, and ethical concerns. This qualitative phenomenological study aims to explore mental health profession als’ perspectives on addressing spirituality in counseling and to assess the necessity of a specialized training program to enhance competencies in this area. We used cri terion sampling to select 11 experienced psychologists, counselors, and academics to, conduct semi-structured interviews, and analyze the data using descriptive analy sis to identify the key themes related to integrating spirituality into counseling. The findings reveal that the current training curricula does not adequately cover spir ituality, which has led to a lack of confidence among mental health professionals. The participants highlighted several barriers, including professional hesitancy, ethi cal concerns, clients’ misunderstandings, and the dominance of secular educational models. Additionally, the study identified the specific competencies needed for inte grating spirituality into counseling and categorized them into knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The professionals emphasized the need for a structured training program that includes conceptual knowledge about spirituality, evidence-based intervention techniques, ethical considerations, and culturally sensitive approaches. Furthermore, recommendations were made regarding the content, format, and evaluation methods for such a training module. The study underscores the urgent need for standardized training to equip mental health professionals with the skills required to address spir ituality in an ethical and culturally competent manner.

A randomized controlled trial of internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) and EMDR-flash technique (iEMDR-FT) for improving mental health in breast cancer patients
(Springer Nature Link, 2025) Savaş, Esra; Gündoğmuş, İbrahim; Kınık, Çiğdem; Kubilay, Derin; Kavakçı, Önder; Yaşar, Alişan Burak
This study aims to compare the effectiveness of internet-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (iCBT) and internet-based Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Flash Technique (iEMDR-FT) in reducing fear of cancer recur rence, traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, and increasing the quality of life among patients diagnosed with breast cancer. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with a sample of patients, equally divided into two treatment groups. The iCBT program was administered over 7 weeks, while the iEMDR-FT was delivered in three sessions in three days. The participants were given a sociodemographic data form, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Control List DSM-5 (PCL-5), Fear of Cancer Recurrence Scale, Depression-Anxiety-Stress 21 scale (DASS-21), and World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale Short Form. Participants were assessed before, immediately after, and three months post-intervention. The mean age of the participants was 43.79 (7.45) years. In comparing the two groups, a statistical difference was found only in the age variable (p=0.025). As a result, there was no significant difference between the two groups when sociodemographic and cancer-related ratings were compared (p>0.05). It was determined that the change in iEMDR-FT scores in all scales was not statistically significantly different compared to the iCBT group (p>0.05). Initial analysis indicates that both iCBT and iEMDR-FT resulted in notable decreases in traumatic stress, fear of cancer recurrence, anxiety, and depression among breast cancer patients. However, this therapeutic improvement is similar in both applications. This result supports the argu ment that two methods with similar effectiveness can be used as alternatives to each other in treatment.

Effectiveness of a structured psychoeducational intervention for gynecologic cancer patients: A randomized controlled study
    (2025) Savaş, Esra; Özkan, Sedat
This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the effects of a structured psychoeducational program on illness perception, coping skills, psychological adjustment, and emotional distress in women diagnosed with gynecological cancer. A total of 49 patients with stage I–III gynecological cancer were randomly assigned to either the psychoeducation intervention group (n=22) or the control group receiving standard oncological care (n=27). The six-week group-based intervention was adapted from the Fawzy and Fawzy model and included cancer education, stress management, cognitive restructuring, emotional expression, and coping skills training. Pre- and post-intervention assessments were conducted using validated Turkish versions of the Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale, Profile of Mood States, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Illness Perception Questionnaire, and Stress Coping Styles Inventory. Non-parametric statistical analyses were employed. The intervention group demonstrated significant improvements in fighting spirit, problem solving, seeking social support, personal control, illness coherence, and mood, as well as significant reductions in helplessness, anxious preoccupation, avoidance coping, fatalism, anxiety, depression, emotional distress, and negative illness perceptions (all p<.05), with medium-to-large effect sizes. No significant changes were observed in the control group. The structured psychoeducational intervention effectively enhances psychological adjustment, reduces distress, and promotes adaptive coping and illness perceptions, suggesting its integration into routine oncology care may improve psychosocial outcomes.

Mental health consequences of earthquakes in various countries
(Turkiye Klinikleri Yayınevi, 2025) Tütüncü, Selen; Hızlı Sayar, Gökben; Çınaroğlu, Metin
Earthquakes are among the most devastating natural disasters, causing significant loss of life, widespread destruction of infrastructure, and long-term psychological and physical impacts on survivors. These events, which often occur without warning, pose a global public health concern due to their suddenness, uncontrollability, and large-scale effects. Unlike other events, earthquakes represent an ongoing series of impacts, with their effects continuing long after the immediate danger has passed, sometimes lasting for years. The psychological consequences, in particular, can persist for months and may even outlast physical injuries caused by the disaster. This chapter explores the mental health consequences of major earthquakes with high fatality rates in various countries, with a particular focus on post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety symptoms. The mental health effects of earthquakes on populations in China, Haiti, Iran, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Syria, and Turkey are specif- ically analyzed. Earthquakes are handled differently in various countries, depending on the resources available and the interventions that can be made. In developing countries, earthquakes are especially challenging because health systems are often overwhelmed by the large number of people needing help for trauma. This chapter explores how earthquakes affect mental health and what factors can help protect and support people during recovery, with a focus on different countries. Overall, the need for global cooperation in addressing the mental health impacts of natural disasters, particularly in less-developed regions, where resources and infrastructure are limited are emphasized.

    Cognitive behavioral therapy in cancer
(Springer Nature Link, 2025) Savaş, Esra
Cancer is not just a biological disease; it also impacts patients on psychological, social, and cultural levels. This chapter emphasizes that cancer patients often face challenges such as anxiety, depression, social isolation, and cultural stigma, which can worsen their mental health and hinder treatment adherence. By addressing cognitive distortions, enhancing social support, and respecting cultural beliefs, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps patients manage their symptoms, reframe negative thoughts, and engage in meaningful activities. Cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, and mindfulness are highlighted as effective interventions that improve patient’s quality of life and psychological resilience. The chapter also discusses the integration of culturally sensitive CBT and using assessment tools to tailor treatments to individual needs, underscoring the holistic approach necessary for cancer care. This chapter presents the foundational theory and model of CBT, followed by a detailed examination of its implementation in cancer care. A representative case study will also be provided, including case formulation and treatment planning.

Psychooncology: The physical, psychological, social, and behavioral aspects of cancer
(Springer Nature Link, 2025) Savaş, Esra
Psychooncology is a specialized field that focuses on the interplay between the psychological, social, and behavioral aspects of cancer, with the goal of enhancing the quality of life for both patients and their families. This chapter delves into the diverse roles played by psychooncology in cancer care, particularly in providing psychosocial support throughout the various stages of the disease. A key focus is on the distinct role of the psychooncologist, who blends multiple therapeutic techniques and works closely with oncologists to address the complex psychological challenges faced by cancer patients. The Cancer Empowerment Model is introduced, offering a holistic approach to improving patients’ psychological wellbeing by fostering resilience and adaptive coping mechanisms. The chapter also explores the significance of culturally sensitive care, emphasizing how interventions must be tailored to a patient’s personal values, cultural background, and family dynamics. Furthermore, the chapter highlights the concept of posttraumatic growth (PTG) and discusses strategies to promote cancer empowerment, helping patients find strength during their treatment. In addition, it examines how digital tools, including teletherapy and AI-driven assessments, are transforming psychooncology, improving accessibility to care and enabling more precise, personalized interventions. This chapter offers a comprehensive exploration of psychooncology, its current practices, and its future directions.

Psychological impact of the February 6 earthquake on displaced individuals with proximal loss residing in temporary shelters
(Routledge, 2025) Filazoğlu Çokluk, Gülşen; Bal, Fatih; Savaş, Esra
The present study examines the psychological effects of the earthquake that occurred in Turkey on 6 February 2023 on individuals residing in temporary shelters who have experienced losses in their immediate surroundings. The objective of the present research is to elucidate the relationships between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and the subjective impact of the traumatic event. Nine months following the disaster, a survey was conducted among 923 adults aged 25 to 60 residing in temporary shelters in Antakya. Participants completed a series of validated and reliable measurement tools, including the DSM-5 Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-5), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Impact of Events Scale (IES). The findings indicate significant and positive correlations between PTSD and all other variables, including the impact of the event, depression and anxiety. The multiple regression analysis revealed that these three variables significantly predicted PTSD symptoms and collectively explained 41% of the variance in PTSD levels. This study emphasizes the cumulative psychological impact of forced displacement and close losses on individuals and underscores the pressing need for culturally sensitive and trauma-informed mental health services in post-disaster intervention processes. The findings contribute to the understanding of trauma dynamics in post-disaster communities and guide the development of targeted mental health policies and psychosocial support programs.

Investigation of the attitudes of faculties of medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy students towards brain drain in terms of future anxiety and satisfaction with life levels
(Bülent DİLMAÇ, 2025) Keçeci, Berra; Gül, Zehra Betül; Özekinci, Ayşe Ekin
The aim of this study is to examine the attitudes of medical, dentistry and pharmacy faculty students towards brain drain in terms of future anxiety and life satisfaction levels. 308 university students enrolled in a foundation university in Istanbul were included in the study. Descriptive statistics, correlation, multiple regression, one-way ANOVA and independent sample t-test analysis were used in the analysis of the data. The regression analysis results showed that hopelessness about the future, future anxiety and life satisfaction were significant predictors of attitudes towards brain drain. According to the independent samples t-test analysis results, it was found that the tendency towards brain drain was higher in male students and students in the clinical education process, while the tendency towards brain drain was lower in dentistry students than in medical and pharmacy students. The study results provide important data for the development of policies to reduce brain drain in the health sector in Türkiye.
