This study presents a comparative analysis of four fundamental divide-and-conquer algorithms—MergeSort, QuickSort, conventional matrix multiplication, and Strassen matrix multiplication—in terms of execution time, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. The experiments were conducted in a Python environment using the CodeCarbon library. Random datasets and datasets containing a high proportion of duplicate elements, ranging from 10,000 to 500,000 elements, were used for the sorting algorithms, whereas square matrices ranging in size from 64 × 64 to 256 × 256 were used for the matrix multiplication algorithms. The results demonstrated that QuickSort exhibited lower energy consumption and carbon emissions than MergeSort, particularly for large datasets containing a high proportion of duplicate elements. In the matrix multiplication experiments, despite its theoretical advantage, the Strassen algorithm consumed more energy than the conventional method because of the memory overhead associated with its recursive structure. These findings indicate that algorithm selection should consider not only theoretical time complexity but also energy efficiency and environmental impact, emphasizing the importance of sustainable software development.
