Association of body mass index with reproductive and metabolic outcomes in women with PCOS undergoing frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer
(Galenos Publishing House, 2026) Aydın, Gerçek; Uzun, Asiye
Objective: To evaluate whether body mass index (BMI) predicts in vitro fertilization (IVF) pregnancy and perinatal outcomes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) undergoing frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer within a standardized protocol. Material and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 69 frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer cycles from 53 women with PCOS at a single IVF center (June 2022-June 2025). All cycles followed a uniform progestin-primed ovarian stimulation protocol with a freeze all strategy. Pregnancy outcomes were calculated per embryo transfer cycle; perinatal outcomes were assessed using a delivery-based approach. Univariable and multivariable regression analyses were performed with robust standard errors clustered by patient, with maternal age as a potential confounder. Results: The mean maternal age was 29.5±4.1 years, and the mean BMI was 25.9±6.3 kg/m2. The live birth rate per transfer was calculated as 33.3% (23/69). BMI was not significantly associated with biochemical pregnancy, clinical pregnancy, ongoing pregnancy, or live birth rates in either univariable or multivariable analyses. In univariable analysis, increasing BMI was associated with a higher risk of gestational diabetes mellitus; however, this association lost statistical significance following multivariable adjustment, though a trend in this direction could not be excluded (p=0.087). No significant association was identified between BMI and hypertensive complications of pregnancy or neonatal outcomes. Conclusion: Based on our findings, BMI does not appear to be a strong predictor of IVF pregnancy success in women with PCOS undergoing frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer. BMI may be more relevant to perinatal metabolic risk than to reproductive outcomes.
Meniscal position after bucket-handle tear repair: A multiplanar MRI comparison of all-inside and inside-out techniques
(Elsevier, 2026) Ağır, Muzaffer; Ali, Jotyar; Sarıkaş, Murat; Toker, Berkin; Tuncay, İbrahim; Taşer, Ömer; Erden, Tunay
Hypothesis/purpose: To compare multiplanar meniscal position following all-inside and inside-out repair of bucket-handle tears using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to evaluate the associa tion between meniscal shift and short-term clinical outcomes. Methods: A retrospective comparative study was performed on 83 patients who underwent arthro scopic repair of bucket-handle meniscal tears. Postoperative MRI was used to evaluate meniscal position in multiple planes by measuring coronal extrusion and sagittal anterior and posterior meniscal position relative to the tibial plateau borders. When available, postoperative measurements were additionally compared with MRI findings from contralateral asymptomatic knees as a patient-specific native refer ence. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using Lysholm, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores at final follow-up. Comparisons were made between all inside and inside-out repair techniques. Results: Eighty-three patients were included (45 medial, 38 lateral). In the medial meniscus, coronal position did not change significantly after repair in either technique, whereas posterior sagittal position increased by approximately 2 mm after repair regardless of repair technique (both p < 0.001). In the lateral meniscus, the meniscus shifted toward a more peripheral coronal position postoperatively in both techniques (both p < 0.001), while posterior sagittal position increased by approximately 5 mm and anterior sagittal position remained unchanged. Postoperative meniscal position was comparable between techniques and generally remained within contralateral native reference ranges. All clinical scores improved significantly without technique-dependent differences. Conclusion: All-inside and inside-out repair produced comparable coronal and sagittal meniscal posi tion at 1 year after bucket-handle repair and similar clinical improvements. Postoperative meniscal position generally remained within contralateral reference ranges regardless of repair technique. No technique-dependent differences in meniscal position or clinical outcomes were identified.
The hippocampus and perinatal alcohol exposure
(Springer Nature Link, 2026) Dursun, İlknur; Elibol, Birsen
Perinatal alcohol exposure is a significant and preventable cause of neurodevelopmental impairment, resulting in long-term changes to the structure and function of the hippocampus. This region of the brain is particularly vulnerable due to its prolonged developmental trajectory and critical role in learning, memory, and emotional regulation. This chapter provides a review of the mechanisms underlying the disruption of hippocampal development caused by alcohol exposure during the prenatal and early postnatal periods. The important mechanisms consist of disrupted neurogenesis, increased neuronal apoptosis, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. These all contribute to permanent changes in the circuitry of the hippocampus and its behavioral outcome. Structural and morphological abnormalities, such as reduced hippocampal volume, altered cytoarchitecture, and impaired dendritic development, are discussed in relation to functional outcomes. These changes are closely linked to deficits in hippocampus-dependent cognitive processes, including spatial learning, recognition memory, and behavioral flexibility, as demonstrated in both clinical and experimental studies. Understanding the mechanisms underlying hippocampal dysfunction provides a basis for improved prevention strategies, early diagnosis, and targeted interventions. Given that fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are entirely preventable, integrating biological insights with public health approaches is essential for reducing the long-term burden of developmental alcohol exposure.
Histopathological assessment of coenzyme Q10 mediated neuroprotection in the mouse cortex exposed to a glyphosate based herbicide
(Fırat Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2026) Saygı, Halil İbrahim; Ayla, Şule; Mutluay, Duygu; Dursun, İlknur
Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are widely used globally, and their potential neurotoxicity is of increasing concern to researchers and the public. Mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants such as Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) have established neuroprotective effects yet approaches to neuroprotection against GBHs are still being developed. This study evaluates the potential of CoQ10 to reverse cortical damage caused by GBH exposure in mice. Fifty adult male ICR mice were assigned to five groups: control, sham, CoQ10 (200 mg/kg/day), GBH (Roundup, 500 mg/kg/day), and GBH+CoQ10. After 49 days of oral treatment, mice were euthanized and brains collected for histological examination using Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) and cresyl violet (Nissl) staining. Cortical histopathology was analyzed with QuPath software. Histological examination revealed that all normal cortical structures were found in the control, sham, and CoQ10 groups. Exposure to GBH produced shrunken, hyperchromatic, and pyknotic neurons with degenerative changes, as well as granulovacuolar degeneration and neuropil vacuolation. In the GBH+CoQ10 group, the cortical organization and neuronal morphology were well-preserved, with only mild focal vacuolation present. Cresyl violet staining revealed severe neuronal loss, Nissl substance depletion, and cytoplasmic pallor in GBH-treated mice, whereas GBH+CoQ10 sections showed higher neuronal density and clear Nissl granules. Quantitatively, GBH significantly reduced cortical neuron number compared with other treatment groups. However, GBH co-treatment with CoQ10 reversed this decline. GBH exposure induces neuronal degeneration in the mouse cerebral cortex, while CoQ10 supplementation preserves cortical cytoarchitecture and neuronal density, supporting its potential as a neuroprotective adjunct against GBH-induced brain toxicity.
A survey on terminology and diagnostic features of a subgroup of non-cirrhotic portal hypertension patients: A report from asia-pacific experts
(Elsevier, 2026) Shukla, Akash; Qi, Xiaolong; Örmeci, Necati; Duseja, Ajay; Sarin, Shiv
Background: There have been recent proposals to replace non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis (NCPF), idiopathic portal hypertension (IPH), idiopathic non-cirrhotic portal hypertension, nodular regenerative hyperplasia, etc. with an all-encompassing term “porto-sinusoidal vascular disorder.” However, the Asia-Pacific Association for Study of the Liver recommended continued use of the term NCPF/IPH. Methods: We sent this questionnairebased online survey to capture the clinical perspectives of 300 specialized experts in the Asia-Pacific region with complete anonymisation. Results: The survey (n = 242 respondents) revealed overwhelming support for the continued use of the NCPF/IPH nomenclature, with 93.4% of experts favoring the term in daily practice. Furthermore, 80.1% endorsed liver histopathology as a fundamental diagnostic component, while 95.9% agreed that a lower-than-cirrhosis-range liver stiffness measurement obtained via transient elastography in the presence of portal hypertension is highly indicative of the condition.A total of 91% agreed with the APASL staging system. Conclusions: The results highlight a persistent regional consensus favoring a clinical, histological and portal hypertension–driven diagnostic and staging framework for NCPF. The survey reveals strong support for the continued use of the NCPF/IPH nomenclature. ( J CLIN EXP HEPATOL 2027;17:103671)
