Yayın Long-term endodontic management of previously traumatized immature maxillary central incisors 8-year follow-up(Wiley Online Library, 2023) Esentürk, Gülce; Erbaş Ünverdi, Gizem; Özen, Buğra; Çehreli, ZaferIntroduction: Although pulpal prognosis is good for uncomplicated crown fractures of open-apex incisors, the pulp can become necrotic and require endodontic intervention. This case report presents endodontic management of previously traumatized immature incisor. Case report: An 8-year-old girl was admitted with an abscessed and painful maxillary central incisor with an enamel-dentin fracture restored previously with composite resin. Radiographic examination showed periapical radiolucency with an open apex, therefore regenerative endodontic treatment was performed. After 15 months, periapical pathology was also observed in the maxillary right central incisor, thus regenerative treatment was applied. Retreatment was required in both teeth after 3 and 4 years due to new periapical lesion. The teeth were treated with hydraulic filling technique involving MTA sealer and single-cone gutta-percha. After 36 months follow-up, there was complete periapical healing. Discussion: In the case of failed regenerative endodontic treatment, conventional methods can provide predictable outcomes. Single cone obturation technique with MTA has shown promising results for necrotic immature anterior teeth with apical periodontitis. Conclusion: The present case report shows successful management of traumatized immature with the single cone filling technique after unsuccesful management using regenerative endodontic therapy.Yayın The impact of COVID-19 outbreak on the pediatric dentists and the pediatric dental practice across Turkey(Galenos Publishing House, 2023) Arat Maden, Eda; Özen, Buğra; Altun, CeyhanObjective: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a significant impact on pediatric dentists and the clinical practice of pediatric dentistry. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic among pediatric dentists in Turkey by evaluating protective measures, attitudes, and perception levels regarding COVID-19, clinical protocols, and professional approaches of pediatric dental practitioners. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted on a sample of pediatric dentists in Turkey. The questionnaire consisted of 34 questions in five domains: personal data, health conditions, precautionary measures and working conditions, knowledge and self-perceived risk of infection, attitudes and perception, and COVID-19 pandemic impact on clinical practice. Results: A total of 221 pediatric dentists participated in the survey. 33.9% of the participants (n=75) perform non-emergency procedures during the pandemic. Almost half of the participants considered atraumatic restorative treatment option for teeth with dentin caries (n=120, 54.3%). Moreover, the participants reported that they would treat a traumatized tooth [a tooth with luxation (n=210, 95%)]. Conclusion: Pediatric dentists can limit their dental procedures to emergency treatments and select biological, noninvasive, or minimally invasive methods to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Yayın Adaptation and testing of cognitive behavioral therapy resource of Turkish version to reduce dental anxiety in children(Galenos Yayınevi, 2022) Gürcan, Aliye Tuğçe; Tamtekin, Elif Ayşe; Aydın, Büşra; Esentürk, Gülce; Özen, Buğra; Marshman, ZoeAim Dental anxiety is a common problem in pediatric dentistry and reducing it with improved communication is important. This study aimed to evaluate whether anxious children give similar answers in the dental office even though they have different cultural backgrounds and to assess the international usability of the cognitive behavioral therapy tool of the Turkish version of "Your Teeth You Are In Control" intervention including "Message to the Dentist" feedback form. Materials and Methods: Two hundred and sixty-two children aged 5-15 years attending a faculty clinic and a private dental office were included in this study. The children were asked to complete the form to report how worried they felt and the levels of pain they experienced before and after their dental treatment on a scale of 1-10 (1=the best and 10=the worst outcome). Statistical analysis was performed with IBM SPSS V23. Results: Most of the participants were worried about the needle, the dentist, and pain, respectively (38.2%, 34%, 28.2%). Most of the children raised their hand as a stop signal (94.7%). There was a statistically significant negative and weak correlation between age and anticipated pain, actual pain and anxiety scores (p= 0.016, 0.003, 0.001 respectively). Conclusion: The "Message to the Dentist" feedback form and cognitive behavioral therapy resource can be used in pediatric dentistry to reduce dental anxiety in its Turkish version. It was useful to understand the sources of dental anxiety in children and this can facilitate treatment by helping pediatric dentists understand how these patients feel about dental treatment procedures and, via their efforts, to improve patient care.Yayın Investigation of the protective effect of gel incorporating Eugenia jambolana leaf extract on 5-fluorouracil-induced oral mucositis: an animal study(Springer, 2022) Aksoy, Nilay; Şen, Emine; Sukmasari, Susi; Bingöl Özakpınar, Özlem; Arıcıoğlu, Feyza; Yücel, Yasemin Yücel; Dumlu, Muhammet Rıdvan; Doolaanea, Abd Almonem; Abdul Rahman, Mohammad Nasrin; Olgaç, Vakur; Bozkan, Pırıl; Özen, BuğraPurpose The study aimed to evaluate the possible preventive effect of two concentrations (3 and 5% w/w) of Eugenia jambolana (EJ) extract against 5-FU-induced mucositis. Method Sixteen adult rats were separated into four groups: two control and two preventive groups. Animals in Groups 1, 2, and 3 were injected intraperitoneally with 60 mg/kg/day of 5-FU on Day 1 followed by 150 mg/kg/day on Day 5. The rats in Group 4 (negative control) were given physiological saline at the same times and doses. Furthermore, on the fifth day of the study, the cheek and sublingual mucosa were irritated by external superficial scratches using the tip of an 18-G needle, followed by the application 15 µL of 20% acetic acid, after which 3 and 5% EJ w/w gels were applied topically for animals in Groups 2 and 3, respectively. Results The weight and the mucositis scores were recorded. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory markers and biochemical tests were analyzed. Significant differences were found between the study groups in weight loss, clinical mucositis scores, mortality rates, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory parameters. Conclusion The preventive effect of 3% gel was significant, with no mortality rate, making it an option for preventive strategies.Yayın The effect of COVID-19 pandemic on life quality of dental professionals(MediHealth Academy Yayıncılık, 2022) Arat Maden, Eda; Özen, Buğra; Altun, CeyhanIntroduction: The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has become the most challenging issue for dental professionals all over the world. The majority of epidemiological reports focus on quality of life and health of general health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, it was aimed to assess the effects of the pandemic on dental professionals’ quality of life. Material and Method: After the vaccination of healthcare workers in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic, a descriptive cross-sectional study of 487 dental professionals was carried out by the researchers. Short Form-36 (SF-36) which is based on eight dimensions of health were used to assess dental professionals’ quality of life. The data was collected using an electronic questionnaire distributed online. The participants were asked to indicate their socio-demographic data, their practices regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and whether they had contracted the COVID-19 disease. Results: The quality of life of all participants was moderately disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic with a mental health score of 51.32 (±20.66) and a physical health score of 72.9 (±16.73). Participants who had case tracing duty during the COVID-19 pandemic scored lower with 45.83 (±20.08) in mental health and 66.94 (±18.47) in physical health. Overall, COVID-19 pandemic has a serious impact on the quality of life and and this impact is more marked in dental professionals with fewer years of experience and those who had case tracing duty during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: The results confirm the need to pay attention to the health of dental professionals who had case tracing duty during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results also point out that dental professionals who are recent graduates and working in the public sector may be more likely to have well-being problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Yayın Evaluation of the effects of different remineralisation agents on initial enamel lesions by scanning electron microscope and energy-distributed X-ray analysis(Wiley, 2021) Kılıç, Münevver; Gürbüz, TaşkınBackground: This study compared the ability of four remineralization agents to restore demineralised enamel lesions in permanent human incisors. Methods: In total, 40 teeth were included in the study. Two samples were obtained from each tooth. The 80 samples were divided into 10 groups (n = 8 per group). The right halves of the teeth were controls solely subjected to demineralisation and stored in artificial saliva for the duration of the experiment. The left halves of the teeth were remineralised using a 5% NaF-containing fluoride varnish (GC MI varnish; GC Corp.), a toothpaste containing casein phosphopeptide and amorphous calcium (GC tooth mousse; GC Corp.), a water-soluble remineralisation paste containing fluoride, hydroxyapatite, xylitol (Remin Pro; Voco), and ROCS remineralising gel containing Ca, magnesium(Mg) and phosphate (P). After 21 days of remineralisation, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) assessments were performed, and the results were analysed using one-way analysis of variance. Results: EDX analysis showed that the ROCS medical remineralising gel had the lowest Ca/P ratio among the groups (P = .04). Compared with the control groups, the Remin Pro and ROCS medical remineralising gel treatments produced significantly higher Ca/P ratios (P = .014 and P = .025). These results were statistically significant, and P-value <.05 was accepted for statistical significance. Conclusions: The group treated with a fluoride-free, xylitol-containing ROCS medical remineralising gel had the lowest Ca/P ratio. Compared with the control groups, Remin Pro and ROCS remineralising gel appeared effective for repairing initial enamel lesions.
