Optimization is a key and current topic in the design of efficient and productive wings for turbines and air vehicles, as in many other fields. While bio-inspired wing designs have gained attention in recent years, further research is needed to fully optimize their aerodynamic performance. This study presents the stages and results of an optimization study conducted on a biomimetic wing model previously developed, inspired by the samara (maple seed) with the objective of maximizing the lift/drag ratio. The aerodynamic performance of the model, obtained through shape optimization using the Taguchi method to optimize the scale of the curves, was compared with that of the original model through numerical and experimental analysis. The experimental analysis was conducted for the values of Re = 18,000, 30,000, and 36,000, corresponding to the free flow velocities of 6, 10, and 12 m/s, respectively. In addition, the numerical analysis of all biomimetic wing models in the optimization process was modeled to replicate experimental conditions, and the 3D analysis was performed using the Ansys Fluent software. Shape optimization yielded the most pronounced aerodynamic performance gains for the proposed biomimetic model at a 3° angle of attack, resulting in increases of 334% at 6 m/s, 275% at 10 m/s, and 403% at 12 m/s. Beyond this optimal condition, performance enhancements diminished as the angle of attack increased. Specifically, at an angle of attack of 5°, the performance increments reduced to 283%, 170%, and 176% across the respective flow velocities of 6 m/s, 10 m/s, and 12 m/s. Furthermore, the potential application of these biomimetic models in wind energy systems was also discussed.
